Welcome to DinosaurTime!
INTRODUCTION
DinosaurTime is one of a series of animated
ColoringTimeBooks. Like a coloring book, you will pick the
colors you want to use and you will color drawings. With
DinosaurTime you will also create the pictures that you want
to color using any or all of the many drawings provided (such
as Dinosaurs, Plants or Scenery) and draw your own. You will
also be able to create and use patterns (such as the leaves
of a tree) and you will be able to erase your mistakes.
DinosaurTime is easy to use. Once the program is loaded,
one mouse button (the left one) does it all. Mistakes can be
erased or will just result in an audible "beep" and a
continuing prompt to choose an action. Animated icons help to
explain the choices: pick an enlarging balloon to enlarge a
drawing, a rotating balloon to rotate a drawing or a
shrinking balloon to shrink the size of a drawing. Actions
are natural: as you draw a line you continue to press down on
the mouse button, just as you must press a crayon to the
page. If you wish, you can save your picture in the
computer and show it on the computer screen whenever you
like.
When you SHOW your pictures, you can add animation. You
can choose to change your picture to a Night scene, with moon
and blinking stars. Or, you can add Rain to your pictures.
Other animation will be available in future versions.
DinosaurTime is a great introduction to the computer and
a beginning to art. Icons, help messages and using a mouse
are all included. Picture composition, choice of patterns and
choice of colors are all part of creating art. Have FUN !!!

In SCREEN 1, you pick drawings you want to color. Move
the mouse pointer to square #1 and press the mouse button.
The Brontosaurus drawing and 5 other large prehistoric
animal drawings are displayed. Press on any of these
and it will appear in the Drawing area. Move it to where you
want it by moving the mouse and put it there by pressing the
left mouse button. If you would like the drawing larger,
smaller, rotated or to disappear, move the mouse pointer to
the Actions Area and press in the square you want. If you
make a drawing disappear, you can make it reappear by
pressing on the "Undo" square. If you press anywhere in the
Drawing area, the drawing will be Moved there. Pick other
drawings from these six, or when finished, "Return" by moving
the pointer to the "Mouse Sq" and pressing. Find out what
other drawings can be used by pressing on the other choices
(squares #2, #3, #4, #5, and #6). When you're "Done"
choosing drawings, press on the "Mouse Sq". The picture will
be "Refreshed" - all drawings will be redrawn, in order, and
any overlaps will be removed to give the picture a 3D effect.
SCREEN 2 is where you can pick upto 8 colors to color
with (8 others are always used). Move the arrow to boxes 1-5
and press there if you want that color. Move the arrow to box
#6 and press if you want "More" color choices. A total of 45
additional color choices are available, after which the
colors are repeated. When 8 are picked or when you are done,
move the arrow to the "Mouse Sq" and press there. The crayon
box in the Actions Area will be filled with all of the colors
you will use next.
SCREEN 3 allows you to color your drawing in a variety
of ways:
Box #2: If you press on the Crayon box, you will be
allowed a choice of 15 colors, a choice of drawing
thicknesses and a choice of drawing styles (straight line
types and freehand).
Box #3: If you press on the Eraser box, you will be
allowed to erase "all colors" or just "one selected color"
and you can choose the size of eraser you want to use. To
erase, move the arrow to where you want and the eraser will
follow it. Press down on the left mouse button and move the
eraser using the mouse to erase.
Box #4: If you press in the "Roller" box, you will be
allowed your choice of 4 patterns (bricks, waves, leaves or
hair) and your choice of 2 ways of placing the pattern (as
smaller, nonoverlapping tiles or as larger overlapping
tiles). Your selection will show in Box #4. Move the pattern
to where you want it and press the left mouse button to place
it there. Continue to press and move the button to draw the
pattern over an area.
Box #5: If you press in the "Paint Can" box you will be
allowed your choice of colors and of patterns with which to
fill areas outlined in BLACK. Your selection will show in
Box #5. Move the arrow in the Drawing area to where you want
it filled and press the left mouse button to fill. Continue
with that pattern or move the arrow to the Actions Area and
press on a different pattern. For a different color, move the
arrow to Box #5 and start over again.
Remember, the area to be filled must be completely
surrounded by the BLACK color. Other dark colors may appear
BLACK, but there is only one BLACK crayon and only it works.
Box #6: If you Press here you will design your own
pattern. A Design Grid will appear below the Actions
area. When picking Box #6, you are given the choice to
start over or continue with the pattern you have already
made. If you start over, you must choose the background
color for the pattern. Pick a color and move the arrow to the
Design Grid. Press and release, or continue to press to color
the pattern. Pick other colors and continue to create your
pattern. When done move the arrow to the Drawing area and
press and release, or continue to press to place your
pattern. Your pattern will show in Box #6.
SCREEN 4 allows you to save your picture as a file on
your hard drive. Each picture will take about 10,000 to
200,000 bytes of storage space, depending on the detail.
Each time you run DinosaurTime, the first picture saved will
be named "dino1", the next "dino2", and the last as "dino3".
Only 3 pictures can be saved using these names. If you want
to permanently save a picture you will need to give it a
NEWNAME. To do this you can use the NEWNAME option.
SCREEN 5 allows you to make another picture or to return
to the Main Menu.
To give your pictures a NEWNAME, pick that choice. Since
only 3 names are given to your pictures, you should use
NEWNAME for any picture you want to permanently save. You
will use the mouse button to rename it. The picture will be
Shown so that you will be sure that it is the correct one.
To ERASE any picture use ERASE. The picture that you
want to erase will be Shown so that you can be sure that you
want to erase it.
To PRINT, pick that choice on the Main Menu. This is to
print the BLACK outline of your picture so you can make real
coloring books, to color in the usual way. Options are
provided for many 9 dot and 24 dot matrix printers; not all
options will work on all printers. Find what works best on
your printer. The LPT1 printer port is assumed to be the
location of you printer.
Printing is a slow process. The computer must think
before it starts and it may stop during the printing to think
some more. At the end, you will be returned to the Main Menu.
To END the program, pick the END choice in the
Main Menu.
To SKIP over some options, pick the "skip" box whenever
it appears in the program.
NOTE TO PARENTS
Once the program is started, if you want to, you can
detach the keyboard since only the Mouse is required. As
long as the END option is not selected from the Main Menu,
users can continue to play for hours. If END is selected,
simply reattach the keyboard to restart the program. Also,
should printer problems occur, the keyboard will be required.
As long as the computer is not "Reset" or "Restarted",
and without a keyboard, the chances of changing files not in
the COLOR directory are reduced. Furthermore, the NEWNAME,
and ERASE options should change only picture (.rsm) files,
not the program itself. (Please read the next section).
